Introducing Power Up North London – Moving Towards a Sustainable Future
Power Up North London (PUNL) is a community energy company with a mission to work with local communities and businesses to lower costs, reduce emissions and build local ownership of renewable energy.
PUNL’s multi-disciplinary team includes expertise in retrofit, installing solar, heat pumps and LED lighting, as well as running energy skills training and giving energy advice to residents. Over 40 projects have been delivered in the last 10 years, including those for schools, community centres, faith buildings and many others across north London. The organisation is now working with Enfield Council and with Edmonton Community Partnership to support schools in Enfield with the end-to-end delivery of rooftop solar to save costs and reduce carbon emissions.
Using a community financing model, PUNL has raised over £350k from local businesses and residents to fund the purchase of solar panels. Investors get their capital back over an agreed period and also benefit from interest. These projects are underpinned by a licence agreement between PUNL and the solar site for use of the roof.
Businesses can support school solar projects by donating Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) funds which, along with any grant funding, will help to reduce the term of the licence to closer to 10 years. PUNL can also project manage solar installs for businesses charging a project management fee for this service. Once PUNL has agreements in place to work with Enfield schools to install solar panels – we will publish more details about how businesses can get involved.
